“I developed a passion for medicine early in medical college when I realized that something I did made a positive change for someone else,” remembers Dr. Ferencz. “I knew it was a career that would drive me for a lifetime.” As a neurologist, Dr. Ferencz has pursued two special interests-- sleep and stroke-- during his more than 20 years of practice.
Board certified in internal medicine, neurology and sleep medicine, Dr. Ferencz spearheaded the development of one of New Jersey’s first Sleep Centers at CMC. “Humans spend about one-third of their lives sleeping. A lot goes on neurologically, physiologically and psychologically during sleep that affects our daytime hours,” he explains. “In sleep medicine, we can dramatically improve the quality of life for patients and families. In neurology there are many neurological diseases with prolonged courses -- Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s-- for which there are growing opportunities for treatment and improving quality of life.”
Dr. Ferencz’s years of dedication to improving care for people who experience stroke helped to establish CMC’s Primary Stroke Center, recently certified by The Joint Commission. “It is an exciting time to be in this subspecialty,” he says. “Twenty years ago we could diagnose a stroke, but there was no treatment. Today we can save lives.” Dr. Ferencz is quick to point out that it takes a multidisciplinary team of dedicated professionals to create and maintain a quality stroke program. “The great outcomes this team has accomplished continue to inspire everyone’s efforts. In the heart of a retirement community we are conducting clinical trials for stroke medications that will provide even better alternatives for future patients.”
“We never know what tomorrow’s research will give us,” says Dr. Ferencz optimistically. “Whatever medical and technological advances come along, we will apply them here for the people in Ocean County.”
