Children
undergoing elective heart surgery are usually admitted to the hospital
early on the morning of surgery. Specific instructions regarding the
admission process will be reviewed during the pre-admission visit.
After admission to the hospital, your child may
receive an oral medication before going to the operating room. This
will make him/her more relaxed.
Parents are encouraged to accompany their children
to the entrance of the operating room. A family waiting area is available
for parents to remain until surgery is complete. A nurse from the Cardiothoracic
Surgery Department or Cardiac Intensive Care Unit keeps
parents informed about their child's progress in the operating room.
Parents should notify the nurse if they plan to leave the family waiting
area for any reason.
