Children's Hospital of New Jersey Physician Appointed to NJDHSS Cardiovascular Health Advisory Panel
Joel T. Hardin, MD, Director of Cardiology at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, was recently appointed to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Cardiovascular Health Advisory Panel (CHAP). CHAP was established under the authority of the New Jersey Commissioner of Health and Senior Services to provide expert clinical and technical advice required for the development of sound cardiovascular health policy across the state. The panel is called upon to assist in the development of state-wide cardiovascular health promotion and disease prevention activities, review and advise on technological developments and the accepted standards of practice, advise on the development and implementation of state-wide cardiac research and data activities, as well as other issues regarding the cardiac care of New Jersey residents. Dr. Hardin, the only pediatric cardiologist on the panel, has authored several journal articles and book chapters in the field of pediatric cardiology, and has ongoing research interests involving pediatric cardiac intensive care, cardiovascular pharmacology and heart failure management. He is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, American Academy of Pediatrics, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. In 2007 he was appointed to the Board of Directors for the American Heart Association Northern New Jersey Region - Heritage Affiliate. Dr. Hardin is a leader in New Jersey in establishing screening programs designed to identify young athletes who might be at risk for sudden cardiac death. He is a consultant pediatric cardiologist for hospitals across central and northern New Jersey, and he volunteers service as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School (Newark, NJ). He also serves as Medical Counsel and volunteer cardiologist for the Rotary Club International Gift of Life program, a charitable medical program providing cardiovascular surgery to children from countries where sophisticated and expensive medical care is not locally available.
