Over the past fifty years, Monmouth Medical Center
has maintained and supported the oldest independent orthopaedic
residency in the State of New Jersey. The program was started at
the behest of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons at the
end of World War II. Recently, our program completed an expansion
from one to two residents per class. Traditionally, general orthopaedic
expertise has been the hallmark of our program; the development
allows us to continue this experience coupled with expanded educational
opportunities. Our program’s experience with Board passage
rates and in-training exam scores over the last five years has
been excellent.
The faculty of our residency program continues to demonstrate
stability and growth. The teaching staff includes thirty-two board
certified orthopaedists, ten of whom hold paid positions in the
program. The thirty newest members of the staff are fellowship
trained and have offices within the hospital complex or the catchment
area radius. Over the last eighteen years, all twenty-two program
graduates have become Board certified. The faculty is responsible
for planning and implementing the educational program under the
direction of Dr. Angelo Lopano, the chairman and program director
since 1987.
MMC is a major affiliate and regional clinical campus of the Drexel
University College of Medicine, previously Hahnemann Medical College.
The relationship between Drexel and Monmouth extends back to 1967
with faculty appointments for all teaching staff.
