Research
plays an integral part in Monmouth Medical Center’s dual
role as community and academically based referral and teaching
medical center. The research program in Medical Education
promotes scholarly activity among residents and attending physicians
so that they can develop habits of inquiry, learn to evaluate research
findings and obtain new knowledge as part of their investigations.
The large volume of clinical care that exists in all subspecialties
represented by the teaching staff presents many opportunities for
residents and faculty to participate in research. This training
exceeds national standards for accreditation and puts residents
on the cutting edge of science and therapy.
Each department has a core of attending physicians who conduct
research and act as faculty mentors for the resident investigators. The
Department of Medical Education includes staff who assist residents
in developing research projects, utilizing research methodology,
and preparing manuscripts for publication and presentation at regional
and national meetings.
Interactive conferences on medical literature interpretation,
applied descriptive and inferential biostatistics, experimental
design and protocol development are part of each residency program’s
core curriculum.
The research staff provides residents with individualized project
support that includes literature searching, statistical analysis,
data presentation, formatting and editing, and preparing protocols
for submission to the Institutional Research Review Board.
Residents in any program can participate in multidisciplinary
studies, sponsored research and collaborative projects with other
institutions.
As part of the training program, each resident produces at least
one scholarly work suitable for publication; most are submitted
for Monmouth’s annual manuscript and poster day. In
this juried competition, prizes are awarded by a multidisciplinary
committee based on originality, significant contribution to medicine,
involvement, organization and style, and degree of effort by the
author.
Residents and attending physicians regularly present their findings
at regional and national meetings of their respective societies
and frequently have their articles published in major peer-reviewed
journals. Residents attending national professional society
meetings receive travel stipends and are relieved from regular
program duties.
