A Day in the Life...

Pediatric Residency

6:30 AM:
Residents report to the inpatient unit where they receive informal sign out from the night shift team, review patient flow sheets and examine problem patients.

7:15 AM:
Night shift teams leaves.

8:00-9:00 AM:
Morning Report

First year residents present recently admitted patients. Histories, physical exams, assessments, differential diagnoses and management are discussed with a variety of general and subspecialty attendings.

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM:
Bedside Rounds

Bedside work rounds are conducted on the inpatient units. Medical students and first year residents are supervised by a senior resident team leader. The "service" attending may join these rounds or conduct a more formal "attending rounds."

12:00 - 1:00 PM:
Noon Conference

Faculty members from general and subspecialties present the "core lecture" series.

1:00 – 5:30 PM:
General Patient Care

Residents provide ongoing patient care during this time, write progress notes, perform procedures and admit patients.

5:30 PM:
Night Float Team Arrives.

5:30- 6:30 PM:
"Sign Out"

The on-call team reports and patients are endorsed by the first year resident. Afterward, residents may leave if no work is pending.

7:00 PM
Day shift team leaves.
