is a 671-bed, regional care, teaching hospital affiliated
with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York.
Founded in 1901, Newark
Beth Israel Medical Center is the only medical facility
in the state where heart, lung and kidney transplants are
performed. The Medical Center provides comprehensive health-care
services to its local communities and is a major referral
and treatment center for patients throughout the northern
New Jersey metropolitan area.
The Medical Center is fully
accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations and the American Osteopathic Association.
The Beth provides services to approximately 30,000 inpatients
and same day surgery patients; 66,000 emergency room visits;
260,000 outpatient visits; and 2,900 births each year. There
are over 800 active physicians on staff.
In addition to heart, lung
and kidney transplantation, the medical center is home to
Children's Hospital of New Jersey, The Saint Barnabas Cardiac
Centers, and the N.J. Poison Information and Education System
hotline; the state's first accredited Sleep Disorders Center;
one of the largest electrophysiology programs in New Jersey;
a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; the largest hospital-based
dental program in New Jersey; and major cardiology and cardiac
surgery programs. The Medical Center also offers on-site
MRI; the nationally recognized Pacemaker Center; the Center
for Adults with Congenital Heart Disease; bone marrow transplantation;
The Flo Okin Oncology and Blood Disorders Center; the Comprehensive
Hemophilia Center; The Valerie Fund Children's Center;
the Center for Geriatric Health Care; and a Regional Perinatal
Center.
Newark Beth Israel's primary
care population includes patients from Newark and local
environs of Irvington, Hillside, Elizabeth, the Oranges,
and other nearby communities. Approximately half of our
patients are suburban residents who come to this medical
center for its tertiary subspecialty services (cardiology,
oncology, nephrology, etc.).
The patient population comes
from a broad socio-economic spectrum that enriches the training
experience of the house staff.
The Department of Medicine
occupies approximately 200 beds of which half are general
medical beds. There are dedicated units for Nephrology,
Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, and Cardiac Telemetry.
In addition, the Department includes a 19-bed Medical Intensive
Care Unit and a 24-bed Coronary Care Unit. Throughout the
three years, residents will have the opportunity to work
directly with an extremely diverse group of attending physicians
including full-time and volunteer physicians, generalists
and sub-specialists, physicians with urban practices and
physicians with suburban practices.
Graduate medical
education is a priority at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center,
with residencies in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, radiology,
obstetrics/gynecology, pathology and emergency medicine.
