The
general principles of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency
Program are:
1.
A balance needs to exist between education and service needs;
and
2. Respect and a professional demeanor
should exist in the relationships among all members of the
department.
The
program provides for a superior resident educational milieu
which balances the wide ranging and challenging population
served and the academic excellence demanded by the department.
The foundation of the program, which is fully accredited
by the ACGME and based upon the CREOG Educational Objectives,
is its written curriculum which specifies the educational
topics and goals relevant to current training in obstetrics
and gynecology and required for board certification. These
requirements are met by either direct patient contact or
didactic sessions (commonly by both) during the four year
training period.
The
strength of our program resides in the spectrum of patients
and the diversity of the attendings to which our residents
are exposed. The combination of generalists in obstetrics
and gynecology from both the community and full time faculty
complements the subspecialty faculty providing patient care.
Unlike some urban university medical centers, the patient
population cared for by our residents represents a balanced
mixture of private and service patients.
The figures noted in the “Curriculum”
section outline the typical experience of the resident.
The program is in the midst of increasing the resident complement.
We currently offer three PGY1 positions (2 categorical,
1 preliminary). We anticipate offering four PGY1 positions
(3 categorical, 1 preliminary) in the 2006 match.
