Neurosurgery Residency Program

Neurosurgery Residency Program

General Requirements for Applicants

The osteopathic neurosurgical residency program at SBHCS is a 5 year program following a year of internship completed at an AOA approved program. It is academically affiliated with the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine Educational Consortium (OPTI-NYCOMEX) of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). The candidates must be graduates of approved osteopathic medical schools

The program, which is approved for 1 (one) resident per year for 5 (five) years, is administered by the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INNS) of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System (SBHCS) which is the largest health care provider in the State of New Jersey. It is linked with an internship program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) which has an option to include specific neuro-related elective rotation for those who are interested in neurosurgery.

Those interested in the neurosurgical program can apply for the internship position and ask to be linked with the neurosurgical residency, in which case they will be interviewed by the neurosurgical faculty. Unless specifically stated however, being accepted into the internship program does not guarantee acceptance in the neurosurgical residency program. Conversely, some applicants may be accepted into the neurosurgical residency program after the completion of the 4th year of medical school and placed into the internship program. All applicants must have good scores on their national boards, and three letters of recommendation. They must submit with their application a two page essay as to why they want to become neurosurgeons.

The candidates must spend at least two weeks rotating on the neurosurgery service either during their 4th year of medical school or during their internship at Saint Barnabas Medical Center or Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

The program is directed by Otakar R. Hubschmann, M.D. and supervised and administered by Gregory Rokosz, D.O., J.D., who is the Osteopathic Director of Medical Education at Saint Barnabas Health Care System and by Dr. Henry Rosenberg who is the Director of Medical Education at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
