Appointments to the first year of residency are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applications are accepted from categorical candidates wishing to complete the full five-year general surgery residency, and from non-categorical (preliminary) candidates preparing for specialty training after the initial first and second years of training. The program offers four categorical positions and between four and six preliminary positions at the PGY I level.
Applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A completed application includes: an official copy of National Board or USMLE scores, an official medical school transcript, a Dean’s Letter, and at least three letters of reference from faculty members familiar with the applicant’s performance. Additionally, foreign graduates must submit a valid ECFMG certificate. It should be noted that Saint Barnabas does not sponsor J-1 Exchange Visitor or H1-B visa applicants.
The deadline for receipt of complete applications is December 31. After careful review, highly selected applicants are invited for formal interviews, which are held from late December through January.
The interview process includes a presentation and program overview with the Program Director and Chairman, interviews with members of the Residency Interview Committee, a tour of the facility, followed by lunch with the residents who answer any additional questions.
