Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery offers a fully accredited five-year general Surgery residency program with full-time and voluntary teaching staff. A total of 28 positions are approved – four categorical residents at each level of training and up to eight preliminary residents in PGY levels 1 through 3. In 2005, the Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) General Surgery Training Program, seeking to enhance trauma experiences for the residents, affiliated with Lincoln Medical Center, Bronx, New York.
The goal of the Saint Barnabas Medical (SBMC) General Surgery Training Program is to prepare the resident to function as a qualified practitioner of surgery at the high level of performance expected of a board-certified specialist. We seek to achieve this goal via a balanced process of training that allows the resident broad exposure to didactic information, clinical experience, and clinical research opportunities.
The emphasis of our training is on quality patient care and the development of clinicians who continue to learn, appreciate and apply critical thinking skills toward the enrichment of surgical practice. The program is designed to allow the resident a gradual progression through the program with incremental acquisition of skills, knowledge, judgment, maturity, and responsibility appropriate for the level of training.
In addition to a sound basis in general surgery, we offer exposure to a variety of surgical subspecialties, as there are no resident surgical fellows and few subspecialty residents at SBMC.
