University of Medicine and Dentistry - New Jersey Medical School

The Department of Medicine is delighted with our new institutional affiliation with UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.  The Medical School is located 30 minutes from the Saint Barnabas Medical Center campus, facilitating this interrelationship. Many Medical Center staff have important roles at the Medical School. Students are accepted for rotations in our department.

Greater Livingston Area

Saint Barnabas Medical Center is located in Livingston, New Jersey, a wooded suburban town about 25 miles west of New York City. Direct bus service to the city is available within a five-minute walk of the hospital. Philadelphia is two hours away by car. Newark International Airport, with major national and international connections, is an easy 20 minute drive.

The Livingston area has several nearby colleges, including Seton Hall University, Fairleigh-Dickinson University, Drew University, Kean University, and Rutgers University. Princeton University is an hour's drive in distance. The Livingston public school system is highly rated (as are the school systems in West Orange and Millburn (which has been rated one of the country’s top three public high schools), both adjacent to Livingston), and the township also has an adult school. There are vocational, technical, and art schools in the area.

New York City's cultural life is about 40 to 60 minutes from Livingston. Close to the Medical Center is the Paper Mill Playhouse, a highly regarded professional theater, as is the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Drew University in adjacent Madison hosts an excellent summer Shakespeare Festival. The Garden State Arts Center, in nearby Holmdel, features diversified programs in dance, music, and theater, and is easily accessible via the Garden State Parkway. The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra performs in the area throughout the year.

Year-round recreational facilities make this part of New Jersey a pleasant and desirable location. The South Mountain Reservation, offering over 2,000 acres of picnic areas, forests, hiking, cross-country skiing, and bridle trials, is an easy walk from the hospital. A zoo and ice skating arena are nearby. The area boasts many fine restaurants, public golf courses, indoor tennis clubs, and outdoor tennis courts. The Meadowlands Sports Arena is a short drive away for football, basketball, hockey, and horse racing fans. The famed beaches of the Jersey Shore are an hour’s distance by car, and the Vernon Valley Great Gorge ski areas are also nearby.
