The Saint Barnabas Radiology
Department selects four residents per year plus one
fellow in Mammography. The residents rotate
in 12 week blocks through the following sections – fluoroscopy,
chest, bone, ultrasound, CT, interventional, nuclear
medicine, and MRI. The Armed Forces Institute
of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington, DC is a four week
radiology/pathology correlative program offered to
all residents. Pediatric radiology is taken
at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
(CHOP).

There are two full time physicists at Saint Barnabas.
They are responsible for a guided one-year self study
course in radiation physics and radiobiology. A dedicated
radiology conference room with modern audiovisual
facilities is available to all radiology residents
and staff. Within the conference room there is a
radiology reference library. The medical center has
a major full service library as well.
Residents are evaluated quarterly and must sit for
the Raphex Physics examination as well as the ACR
In-Service examination annually. All evaluations
are discussed individually with the residents. Senior
residents also undergo an intensive board review.
Residents may attend a course during their upper
years and any resident presenting a paper will be
sent by the medical center to the presentation site.
Clinical research is strongly supported and each
resident is expected to complete, and submit for
publication, at least one article during training.

Conferences are given daily and include noon conferences,
4:00 pm conferences, monthly visiting professor programs,
topic reviews, tumor boards and journal club. The “case
of the week” is also a resident responsibility.
Residents are also involved in the teaching program
at Saint Barnabas. Residents present and review cases
for other medical center departments and participate
in inter and intra departmental conferences. In addition,
senior residents give the incoming first year residents
a formal two-month course. Beginning in September
of each year, St. George’s, NYCOM and Mt. Sinai
students spend a one-month elective in the department.
Residents have the opportunity to teach rotating
students and transitional interns who spend a one-month
elective in the radiology department.
After finishing their training almost all residents
continue on to fellowships at prestigious programs
including the Peter Brent Brigham, Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania, Tufts, Yale, Sloan-Kettering,
Columbia, and Ohio State. Those residents who desire
positions directly out of residency have not experienced
any difficulty in obtaining excellent positions both
in private and academic practice. We are seeking
bright, hard-working, enthusiastic individuals who
are dedicated to learning and can work well with
others.
Our residents/fellow are an important part of the
Saint Barnabas family. We are very proud of their
accomplishments and the residents seem genuinely
pleased with our program. The radiology residency
is an integral part of the department and medical
center and we are looking forward to its continued
growth and success.
