Breast cancer prevention should start at a young age and continue for a lifetime. Through outreach and education, women are encouraged to follow recommendations provided by the American Cancer Society, which include: performing monthly breast self-examinations starting at age 20 and having yearly mammograms starting at age 40.
These recommendations may also call for more frequent follow-up services as prescribed by a patient’s physician. Clinical breast exams should be part of a periodic health exam, about every three years for women in their 20s and 30s, and every year for women 40 and older.
