Who should be screened for Vascular Disease?
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the primary cause of disability in older Americans. Peripheral arterial disease strikes at least one quarter of people over 70. More than 15,000 Americans die each year from ruptured aneurysms. Screening is recommended for individuals over age 60 who have any of the following conditions or other indicators that put them at high risk for vascular disease:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Family history of vascular disease
- Prior stroke or heart disease
