Livingston, NJ—The Kogan Celiac Center of the Saint Barnabas
Health Care System will present its first Annual Holiday Gluten-Free
Food Expo on Monday, December 8, 2008 at the Ambulatory Care Center
in Livingston, NJ.
From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., attendees will be able to sample a wide range
of gluten-free food from a variety of vendors, manufacturers and restaurants.
From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., the featured speaker, author Jax Peters Lowell,
will deliver her inspirational speech entitled Living Well is
the Best Revenge! There will also be an opportunity to purchase
Ms. Lowell’s books (No More Cupcakes & Tummy Aches for
children and The Gluten-Free Bible for adults).
Lowell helped put celiac disease on the national radar screen in
1995 with a book entitled Against the Grain. This book—featured
on the Food Network program, In Food Today; National
Public Radio; Science New; The New York Times; and quoted in
a Newsweek article, “The Perils of Pasta”—has
helped tens of thousands of people with celiac disease. She has also
published two more gluten-free food books, No More Cupcakes & Tummy
Aches and The Gluten-Free Bible.
Prior to writing books full time, Lowell, a native New Yorker and
award-winning creative director, was named one of the best and brightest
women in advertising by Ad Age Magazine. Gluten-free since
1981, she is a prize-winning poet, author of the powerful and critically
praised novel, Mothers, and is currently working on a memoir, An
Early Winter. People discover her appealing mixture of humor
and compassion whether they are reading her fiction or listening to
her discussions on gluten-free life. The author/speaker lives in Philadelphia
in a restored bread factory. You can visit her website at www.jaxlowell.com
or contact her at jaxonville@comcast.net.
Vendors for this event will include: Calabria Pizzeria, Everybody
Eats, Enjoy Life, Dr. Schar, Cinderella Foods, Miller’s Gluten
Free Bread Co., Joan’s Great Bakes, Legal Seafood, Charlottes’ Bakery
and Katz Gluten Free Bake Shop.
Celiac disease (also known as celiac sprue or gluten sensitive enteropathy),
is a genetic autoimmune disorder that is characterized by an inflammatory
reaction to the ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye
and barley. This reaction causes damage to the fingerlike projections
in the small intestine that are involved in nutrient absorption (known
as villi) and many conditions of malnutrition can occur as a result.
There is no cure for this disease—the only known treatment is
the complete removal of gluten from the diet, which allows healing
and symptom resolution to take place. People with celiac disease become
avid label readers since gluten is found in many processed foods with
many different names. Upcoming changes in food labeling laws will
provide a lot of new and helpful information for individuals who follow
a gluten free diet, but these changes are also complicated and require
some explanation so that informed purchasing decisions can be made.
The Kogan Celiac Center of the Saint Barnabas
Health Care System offers comprehensive
testing and treatment for celiac disease in both adults and children and
is dedicated to providing expert services that include early assessment
and diagnosis, treatment, education and support to improve the health
and well being of those who live with celiac
disease. The Center’s
comprehensive array of public education
strategies includes nutrition education programs, support groups, school
and retail outreach and other health and wellness initiatives. The Center
has been made possible through the generous
support of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kogan. For more information please call
