The kick-off will take place on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Islami Auditorium, Saint Barnabas Medical Center to increase participation, raise awareness and create excitement for the walk with special guest, Dr. Jeff.

Dr. Jeff, Associate Professor and Director of Women’s Health Programs, Department of Family Medicine and Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, took a bold step to improve his health back in the Spring of 2005 by becoming a participant in season two of the TV production, “The Biggest Loser.” By losing a total of 183 pounds through diet and exercise, Dr. Jeff has inspired his family, patients and peers to make healthier lifestyle changes. He will share his experience and address the importance of combating obesity in this country.

The Second Annual Walk for Health … Your Journey to a New Life on Saturday May 3, 2008 at Verona Park, Verona, NJ, will support important research into the effects of bariatric surgery on patients, purchase equipment to meet the needs of our obese population, give patients pedometers to kick off their new exercise program, provide scholarships for pediatric patients participating in the Healthy Life® program and fund any other initiatives that support our patients’ quest towards a healthier lifestyle.

The Obesity and Weight Management Centers at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center assist each patient in addressing the many complex issues related to weight management. They also help them to develop and maintain a healthier lifestyle through the Bariatric Center of Excellence, the Healthy Life® pediatric program, nutritional counseling, behavior therapy, and supervised exercise programs. The Walk for Health helps reinforce our commitment to encourage our patients and the community to live healthy, exercise and maintain a balanced diet.

The walk itself is a family-focused event with face painting, balloon art, airbrush tattoos and a DJ. This year KTU radio personality and recording artist, Judy Torres, will share her personal story of how she achieved a healthy lifestyle at the walk as she greets the crowd and gets everyone energized. Last year the walk had over 250 participants and raised over $20,000.
