Lymphedema is abnormal swelling caused by lymphatic fluid build-up in body tissues. This chronic condition results from damage to the lymph system caused by surgical removal of the lymph nodes, radiation therapy, traumatic injury, chronic venous insufficiency or genetic malformations. Other causes may include traumatic injury, infection, obesity or chronic venous insufficiency. Swelling most often occurs in the arm or leg; however lymphedema can develop in the chest, back, neck, face, abdomen or genitals.

Early assessment and treatment are key factors in preventing long-term complications and improving function. The staff at our Center includes occupational and physical therapists, certified in complete decongestive therapy (CDT), utilize progressive techniques to reduce lymphedema and educate patients in appropriate self-management skills.

Our program includes:

  • Evaluation by a physician (if requested by the primary physician or patient)
  • Initial evaluation by a certified therapist (with physician prescription)
  • An individually-designed treatment plan using:
    • Manual lymph drainage: a gentle massage to stimulate the lymphatic system
    • Compression bandaging and compression garments
    • Patient education, including skin care and precautions
    • A home program, including self management skills and appropriate exercises

Urinary Incontinence and Pelvic Pain Rehabilitation

For more information, or to schedule an appointment, contact 973.322.7500.

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder control which may be caused by a variety of factors including hormonal shifts, surgical trauma, pelvic fractures, chronic cough, childbirth, obesity and repetitive lifting. There are two main types of incontinence:

Urge incontinence is a strong, uncontrolled desire to void resulting in loss of urine. The bladder is overactive and a person experiences increased frequency of urination.

Stress incontinence is a condition which allows urine to leak when coughing, sneezing, laughing or during other physical activities

Mixed incontinence is a combination of stress and urge incontinence.

Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to a wide range of problems that may occur due to muscular weakness or imbalance. As a result, the tissues surrounding the pelvic organs may have increased or decreased elasticity. These imbalances can cause urinary incontinence and/or pelvic pain.

Constant or intermittent pelvic pain may occur in the back, vulvar or rectal areas, lower abdomen, coccyx or thigh. Causes may include childbirth trauma, poor alignment of the pelvis, postural problems, inflammatory disorders and lumbar disc problems.

A comprehensive treatment approach is provided by physical therapists with specialized training in the evaluation and treatment of these conditions. Depending on individual needs, treatment may include:

  • Strengthening weakened pelvic floor muscles to increase muscle awareness, retraining, and coordination to decrease episodes and severity of urinary incontinence
  • Biofeedback training and relaxation techniques to help improve pelvic floor muscle function
  • Therapeutic exercises such as electrical stimulation to improve muscle tone, inhibit abnormal bladder contraction, and decrease pain
  • Manual therapy to address musculo-skeletal misalignment and muscle tone of the pelvic floor and surrounding musculature
  • Education on pelvic floor function, self-management strategies, bladder training to restore normal bladder function and diet and fluid modifications
  • Anatomy and posture education
  • Bladder/bowel care education
  • Bladder re-training
  • Electrical stimulation

If you are experiencing problems, it is important that you first discuss your condition with a doctor who can determine the specific cause and diagnosis. Individuals can then be referred to our program for treatment.

Insurance

As this is a physical therapy service; most insurance companies will cover this treatment.  However, we recommend that you contact your insurance carrier to determine actual benefits.
