It is a special way of acknowledging what babies are “saying” before they can speak with words. The infant massage techniques used and taught at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center enhance the attachment process through the use of the most essential elements of bonding; eye-to-eye contact, smiling, soothing sounds and cuddling as well as smell and sound reciprocity. Medical research has shown that infant massage is suitable for both premature and full-term infants and that massage can, among other things, aid in the baby’s growth and development, improve sleeping, relieve discomfort from pain, congestion, teething, gas and colic, enhance immune response and reduce stress. When a baby is not yet ready to join his or her parents at home, infant massage is an effective, proactive way that parents can feel more bonded to their baby, contribute to the baby’s growth and development and make the hospital experience less stressful for the entire family. Research has also shown that stress hormone levels also decrease for those parents and grandparents who give the massage to their children.
