The Children’s Hospital Abuse Management Program (CHAMP) is the oldest of the four child abuse evaluation, diagnostic and treatment regional centers in the state, and sees 600 to 800 children a year. Three pediatricians, two who are board certified in pediatrics and one who is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine, work with seven psychologists, a social worker and a coordinator to provide the following specialized services:
- Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), a program that provides forensic medical and psychological evaluations for children who may have been sexually abused. Psychological treatment is provided to select cases and referrals made when needed.
- Children of Rape Trauma Syndrome (CORTS) program, which offers medical and psychological follow-up care for children who have been seen in the emergency department or who have been hospitalized for sexual abuse at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey.
- The Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) program, which offers medical and psychological follow-up care to children who may be victims of non-sexual abuse
- The Children’s Hospital Child Abuse Consultation Board, a panel of pediatric subspecialists who provide consultations to referring prosecutors, the Division of Youth and Family Services, other agencies and physicians.
