Belleville, NJ -- The National Arthritis Foundation has selected May as Arthritis Awareness Month to educate people about arthritis and its growing prevalence throughout the United States. This year’s observance focuses on the benefit of exercise for those suffering from the disease.
Over 45 million Americans—one in five adults—and approximately 300,000 children suffer from arthritis pains everyday. According to the Arthritis Foundation, it is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems and the nation’s leading cause of disability among Americans over age 15. This disease limits everyday activities such as walking, dressing and bathing.
“Incorporating low impact aerobic exercise for two and half hours a week and strength exercises at least two days a week is of great benefit for those suffering from arthritis,” said Frank Femino, MD, Director of the Joint & Spine Institute at Clara Maass Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. “Physical activity is an effective way to reduce pain, keep joints flexible, maintain muscle strength and build overall stamina.”
