NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH

Belleville, NJ -- March marks National Nutrition Month, a nutrition education and information campaign created annually by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

Good nutrition involves making healthy food decisions and getting the right amount of nutrients each day. A healthy diet enables people of all ages to work productively and feel their best. It can also help reduce the risk for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, stroke, and osteoporosis, which are leading causes of death and disability among Americans. Finally, eating right can reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol.

“Good nutrition is something people can take advantage of to increase their energy levels and overall health.” said Katie Szymona, RD, Clinical Nutrition Manager at CMMC. “No one can expect to change overnight, but taking small steps over time and gradually introducing more nutritious foods into your diet can lead to a much healthier lifestyle.”

CMMC is challenging its own employees to live healthier lifestyles through a program called The Clara Challenge, which began on February 27 and lasts until May 22. Teams of three CMMC employees will weigh in every week to see monitor their progress and adherence to a lifestyle of more exercise and healthier eating. Each week, they will also contribute a small amount of money; and at the end, the team with the highest percentage of weight loss will win that pot of money.

“We make sure that we provide our customers with a wide variety of food selections,” said Joseph Wojtecki, Director of Food and Nutrition Services at CMMC. “The Clara Challenge helped spur the need for healthy choice meals in the café and we are happy to see that many employees are taking advantage of these alternatives.”
