Angioplasty:
Atlantic C-Port Elective Angioplasty Research Study

What is an Angioplasty?

An angioplasty is a procedure in which a small balloon is inserted to open a blocked artery and restore blood flow to the heart. A heart attack can occur if that blood flow becomes completely blocked.

Highly-experienced Interventional Cardiologists on staff at Clara Maass Medical Center are available to perform elective angioplasty. These are the same trusted physicians who have performed hundreds of life-saving angioplasty procedures on an emergent basis.

About the Atlantic C-Port Elective Angioplasty Study

Clara Maass Medical Center was one of only a select few hospitals chosen to participate in this nationwide research study for its high level of experience and outstanding cardiac services.

The purpose of the Atlantic C-Port Elective Angioplasty study is to compare clinical outcomes of those treated with elective angioplasty at hospitals with on-site cardiac surgery back-up versus those treated with elective angioplasty at hospitals, such as Clara Maass Medical Center, where there is no on-site back-up.

Prior to coming to the hospital for your cardiac catheterization you will be given information about the Atlantic C-Port-E study. If you decide to participate in the study, you will be given an informed consent to sign. Once you provide your consent, you will be registered by computer into the nationwide database for the Atlantic C-Port-E study.

Due to the nature of the study, there is a 25% chance that even though you may choose to have the procedure performed at Clara Maass Medical Center, you may be referred to hospital with on-site cardiac surgery. This will be determined through a computerized randomization process. Seventy-five percent of the patients who register for the study will be able to have the elective angioplasty performed at Clara Maass Medical Center.

Once the procedure is complete, you will receive periodic follow-up from a cardiac catheterization lab nurse to track clinical outcomes.

At Clara Maass Medical Center, maintaining good heart health is the primary goal. The expert staff of cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, award-winning cardiac nurses, and specially-trained cardiac technicians is committed to providing the highest level of cardiac care and quality patient service.
