Community Medical Center Receives HealthGrades
2006/2007 Maternity Care Excellence Award ™

TOMS RIVER, New Jersey, July 25, 2006 Community Medical Centerannounced today that it has been recognized with a 5-Star rating for clinical excellence in maternity care from HealthGrades, the nation’s leading source for independent healthcare quality information. In addition, Community Medical Center ranked in the Top 15% of hospitals in the nation for maternity care, and has been recognized with the HealthGrades 2006/2007 Maternity Care Excellence Award™.

The 2006/2007 HealthGrades programmatic ratings for maternity care are based on the following criteria: in-hospital complication rates associated with caesarean sections, vaginal deliveries and patient choice caesarean sections; in-hospital volume; neonatal mortality, and unspecified (or non-indicated) elective primary cesarean section complication rates.

George G. Trim, M.D., chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at Community Medical Center said, “We are extremely proud and honored to have our efforts recognized by HealthGrades. The entire OB/GYN department strived for excellence on a daily basis. Our successes are made possible, in large part, because of our ‘team approach,’ which integrates our professional and supportive nursing staff as well as our dedicated medical staff.”

For its 2006/2007 ratings, HealthGrades independently analyzed the quality of maternity care for more than 1,400 hospitals across 17 states that make this information publicly available, objectively assessing their clinical performance and quality over the three year period from 2002 to 2004. The four criteria measured were weighted using predetermined weights based on consensus from a physician panel. Each factor’s percentile score was multiplied by its weight and then summed to create an overall score. Based upon each hospital’s overall score, HealthGrades applied the following rating system.

Best – Top 15% of all hospitals within 17 states

Average – Middle 70% of all hospitals within 17 states

Poor – Bottom 15% of all hospitals within 17 states

Receiving a 5-Star designation indicates a hospital has scored in the top 15% or better in the nation for clinical quality.

“Each year, HealthGrades assesses hospital quality and publishes every hospital’s ratings online,” explained Samantha Collier, HealthGrades’ vice president of medical affairs. “Three million people visit healthgrades.com each month in order to determine the hospitals in their communities that provide the highest quality care. Women in the Tom’s River community should be aware of the information available regarding healthcare quality and the outstanding recognition received by Community Medical Centermaternity care.”Collier added.

The complete maternity care ratings are published, free of charge, on the HealthGrades Web site, www.healthgrades.com. Ratings for 28 other medical procedures and diagnoses – including cardiac, pulmonary, vascular, stroke, orthopedics, critical care and gastrointestinal services are also available on the HealthGrades Web site. More than two million users visit the HealthGrades Web site each month.
