TOMS RIVER, New Jersey, September 14, 2006 – The Emergency Department at Community Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care system, is the largest and busiest facility in New Jersey, treating more than 92,000 patients in 2005. Of those, over 17,288 parents turned to CMC to treat the emergency needs of their children.
The department offers general treatment areas, as well as areas for the care of cardiac and trauma patients. In addition, it contains a special area for children with a playroom and eight pediatric treatment rooms.
The KidCare area of the Emergency Department is staffed by board certified pediatricians, and nurses with pediatric experience who are certified in pediatric advanced life support. Furthermore, Dipack Sheth, M.D., board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine recently joined the ED staff. Dr. Sheth comes to Community Medical Center after a long tenure at Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans from December 1992 to January 2006. The hospital was severely damaged from Hurricane Katrina and is longer operating. In addition to publishing numerous articles on pediatric medicine, Dr. Sheth has also given lectures on topics ranging from pediatric burns to bioterrorism.
Mark Meredith, M.D., chairman of emergency medicine at Community Medical Center said, “Dr. Sheth brings with him a wealth of pediatric experience. We’re very excited to have him here. He’s extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of pediatric medicine and he’s great with the kids. The community will surely benefit from his being here.”
Debbie Graf, RN, director of minor treatment and KidCare added, “We are excited to be able to bring our pediatric services to the next level; and we’re committed to providing the highest level of care and compassion to our very special patients and their families.”
KidCare is a specialized emergency department for children up to age 17 with less severe injuries and illnesses. KidCare is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. During off-hours, pediatric patients seen through the main ED are seen by on-call pediatricians that are called as needed by the emergency medicine physicians.
