TOMS RIVER, New Jersey, February 21, 2007 – Clinical excellence is respected in the health care industry, and Community Medical Center is proud to be placed in the countries top 5 percent once again.
The local hospital was handed its third Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, and hospital executives could not be more pleased.
"This award truly speaks to the culture of quality that exists at Community Medical Center," said Mark Pilla, executive vice president of operations for the St. Barnabas Health Care System and executive director of CMC. "To be among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation, for three years in a row, is a testament to our ongoing commitment to provide the highest-quality services to the patients we serve."
The annual study conducted by HealthGrades, a health care ratings company that rates nonfederal hospitals across the United States, showed CMC is in the 5 five percent out of 4,971 hospitals that have significantly lower mortality rates and lower major complications rates.
Scott Shapiro, HealthGrades' vice president of corporate communications, said the studies that have been conducted since 1998 "really identify operational quality."
"Out of the 5,000 hospitals, we look at the ones with high-quality clinical outcomes all across the board," Shapiro said.
The hospital was also recognized for excellence in their pulmonary, general surgery and orthopedic units.
"I think this independent organization that has no connection to the health care industry recognized u,s and that is important because they are coming to us independently and not under regulations," said Stephanie Bloom, chief operations officer of CMC.
Bloom said that since CMC has been under scrutiny by HealthGrades for the last three years, "we have continually worked to improve our care."
"We recognize that there is always need for improvement with new medical technologies," she said, adding, "We will continue to improve our care and learn how we can do things better."
