Dr James PasquarielloTOMS RIVER, NJ, JUNE 17, 2008 – James L. Pasquariello, MD, cardiologist and president of Community Medical Center’s Medical Staff, was named the recipient of the 2008 Hearts In Action Award by the American Heart Association.

The Hearts In Action Award is presented annually to a health care professional in Monmouth or Ocean County who has displayed exemplary excellence in medicine. According to the AHA, the award is presented in memory of Dr. Ronald Rubenstein, a local cardiologist and regional president of the AHA, who worked tirelessly to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke, the nation’s number one and number three causes of death.

Dr. Pasquariello received his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University and his medical degree at the University of Bologna in Italy. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship in cardiology at the State University of New York, Kings County Hospital. He has practiced in Toms River for 25 years.

Board certified in internal medicine and cardiology, with special certification in nuclear cardiology, Dr. Pasquariello is currently serving as the president of the Medical Staff at Community Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.

One of the reasons Dr. Pasquariello was chosen for the Hearts In Action Award, presented to him at the AHA’s Have A Heart Ball held on May 31, is his love for medicine and helping people.

“I pride myself on educating patients on the value of preventive care, especially the importance of not smoking,” Dr. Pasquariello said. He emphasizes the importance of trying to reach people early in life with the message of living a healthy lifestyle.

Mark D. Pilla, executive vice president of Operations for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System and executive director of Community Medical Center, said, “We congratulate Dr. Pasquariello on this most deserved honor. I have known Dr. Pasquariello for many years, and his dedication to his patients and compassion for medicine is remarkable. We are proud to have such a distinguished physician leading our medical staff.”

Dr. Pasquariello said, “Patients thank me for helping them, treating them, or saving their lives. That’s special to me. I’m just trying to help people each day by doing what I love to do. I often stay I never wanted to be anything else other than a physician.”
