TOMS RIVER, NJ, JANUARY 7, 2009 – Many people make a new year’s resolution to get fit and healthy. Exercise plays a vital role in that goal. Community Medical Center has several options to get fit in 2009 with classes for everyone.

Project Healthy Bones is an osteoporosis exercise and education program for older women and men at risk for, or who have, osteoporosis. Classes are taught by volunteer peer leaders and run in 24-week cycles. Class size is limited, and a physician’s medical clearance is required prior to beginning the program. Fee is $10. Held at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River on every Friday from 8 – 9:30 a.m. and 1 – 2:30 p.m.
Don’t get caught off-guard! Learn to protect yourself with simple techniques that focus on the use of leverage and also improve balance. Fee is $3. Held at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River on the first and third Fridays of each month (January 16, February 6, February 20, March 6, March 20) at 1 p.m.
This course is taught by a black-belt instructor for women and girls ages 12 and older who wish to learn techniques for personal self defense. Fee is $3. Held at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month (January 13, January 27, February 10, February 24, March 10, March 24) from 7 – 8 p.m. and the first and third Wednesdays of each month (January 21, February 4, February 18, March 4, March 18) from 4 to 5 p.m.
Described as meditation in motion, T’ai chi chih has been found to have many health benefits. It requires no special ability or exercise equipment. Gentle and slow therapeutic movements are taught by an accredited instructor. Fee is $50 for a five-week class series. Payment is due at the first class. Held at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River January 7, 14, 21, 28 and February 4; February 18, 25, March 4, 11, 18; and April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 from 10 – 11:15 a.m. or 6 – 7:15 p.m.
This six-week series will concentrate on rejuvenating the body through relaxation techniques that include breathing exercises and poses to assist the body in alignment and muscle strength and flexibility. Each class ends with 15 minutes of guided meditation to relieve everyday stress. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat or beach towel. Fee is $50 for a six-week series payable at the first class. Held at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River on every Thursday at 6 p.m. or every Friday at 10 a.m.
Organs and glands can be correlated to different areas on your feet. By massaging your feet, you can release tension that may be built up in those areas in your body. This workshop will teach participants techniques to massage their feet and feel better. Held at the Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road in Toms River on Friday, March 6 from 2 – 3 p.m.
