Community Medical Center Awarded Accreditation from the Joint Commission

TOMS RIVER, NJ, FEBRUARY 2, 2009 – By demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission's national standards for health care quality and safety, Community Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™.

The award, bestowed after a week-long on-site survey at the hospital, recognizes Community’s dedication to complying with the Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards for health care delivery.

Mark D. Pilla, executive vice president of Operations for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System and executive director of Community Medical Center, said he is proud of the employees, physicians and volunteers who dedicate themselves to excellence every day. Pilla called the accreditation "proof of an organization-wide commitment to provide quality care on an ongoing basis."

“Achieving Joint Commission accreditation is a hospital-wide effort,” he said. “Everyone at Community Medical Center played an important role in achieving this distinction. Together we are able to demonstrate the commitment of all Community staff members to achieving excellence.”

Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, executive director of Hospital  Programs, Accreditation and Certification Services at The Joint Commission, said, "The community should be proud that Community Medical Center is focusing on the most challenging goal – to continuously raise quality and safety to higher levels."

Pilla said Community sought accreditation from the Joint Commission “because we want to demonstrate our commitment to patient safety and quality care.” He added, “We view Joint Commission accreditation as one of the highest accolades available in the health care industry as well as an independent indicator of our dedication to superior patient care."

Founded in 1951, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations seeks to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations. An independent, not-for-profit organization, the Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.
