TOMS RIVER, NJ, JANUARY 20, 2009 – Community
Medical Center offers a variety of health and wellness programs
each month designed to keep patients and their loved ones informed
and educated. Programs are free unless otherwise noted, and pre-registration
is required for all by calling 1-888-SBHS-123.
February programs include:
Wednesday, February 4
2 p.m.
The Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River
Research shows that hearty laughter can lower your blood pressure,
increase your heart rate, reduce stress, ease muscle tension, improve
your breathing, boost mental function and burn calories. This program
will teach participants how simple laughter exercises can be practiced
and incorporated into daily life. The program, offered in conjunction
with Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Atlantic and Ocean Counties,
is presented by a Certified Laughter Leader.
Monday, February

1 p.m.
The Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River
This program will provide an overview of joint conservation techniques
and a home exercise program to help manage arthritis of the hip
or knee.
Thursday, February 12
10 a.m. – noon
An overall healthy diet can benefit those already with heart disease
or who are at risk for heart disease. This workshop will provide
practical tips on how to modify diet and lifestyle in order to
improve body weight, blood lipid levels, blood pressure and blood
sugar levels. Healthy snack options will be discussed along with
free sampling.
Thursday, February 19

Meet one-on-one with a registered pharmacist to review your medications.
Participants are asked to bring all of their medications with them
to the appointment.
Thursday, February 19 and 26
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
This course, designed for motorists age 50 and older, is intended
to help drivers improve their skills while teaching them to avoid
accidents and traffic violations. The program takes into consideration
the physical changes of the maturing driver and identifies ways
to compensate for these changes. The eight-hour course is taught
in two four-hour sessions spanning two days. There are no tests.
The fee is $10, payable by check only to AARP.

4:30 – 6 p.m.

Medicine is only just beginning to understand how the sexes differ
in terms of health and disease. Join a nurse to learn about four
important things adults need to know and how to promote good health
throughout the lifespan.
Thursday, February 26
2 p.m.
The Lighthouse, 591 Lakehurst Road, Toms River
Heart disease has been linked to more debilitating conditions
and death in the United States than any other chronic disease.
This workshop focuses on medical, as well as non-medical factors
that can lead to a healthier life. The presentation includes an
overview of heart disease, risk factors and practical tips on effective
measures to prevent or reduce the burden of heart disease.
Starts in February
Income tax assistance will be available at the Lighthouse in Toms
River beginning in February. Older adults who need assistance completing
a simple federal or state tax return can schedule an appointment
with a volunteer counselor. Appointments are required and offered
on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 1-800-621-0096 to schedule
an appointment.
