Patient Safety Points

To help you, the patient, take charge of your care and assist the Radiology Department in providing a safe environment, we are providing this safety information to you with a motto to keep in mind.

Always remember to be S.A.F.E.

Safety first – Know your allergies and medications

Ask – Know and understand the care and treatment you will be receiving. Expect everyone involved in the treatment of your care to identify themselves.

Feel Respected. Expect to be treated with respect, dignity and confidentiality.

Educate – Learn all you can about your illness and treatment options.

Patient Identification

  • The radiology healthcare provider will identify him/herself
  • The Community Medical Center identification badge should be visible.
  • The radiology healthcare provider will ask you to provide two means of confirming your identity

Radiation/MRI Safety

  • The radiology healthcare provider will explain the procedure to you
  • If you are of child bearing age, the radiology healthcare provider should ask about the possibility that you may be pregnant or nursing
  • Depending on the exam, a lead shield will be provided for your protection
  • MRI staff will complete a Patient Screening form to rule out contraindications such as:
Cardiac Pacemakers (except in rare, controlled environments) Implanted neuro stimulators
Cochlear (inner ear) implants Metal or identifiable foreign bodies in the eyes
Swan-Ganz catheters with
thermodilution tips
Ferromagnetic or unidentifiable
neurysm clips of the brain
Shrapnel near a vital organ  

 


 

 

 

 

 

Imaging Procedures

  • The radiology healthcare provider will explain the procedure to you
  • Expect to have your questions addressed
  • The radiology healthcare provider will verify exam ordered by reviewing your physician’s prescription
  • Post procedure instructions will be provided as necessary
  • Safety precautions will be provided if a therapeutic procedure was performed

Radiology Nursing

  • Depending on the procedure, a radiology RN may:

    o Ask you to provide a list of the medications you are taking
    o Review and document your allergy history
    o Ask you to sign a consent form which will be reviewed by the Radiologist or RN
