What is an Angioplasty?
An angioplasty is a procedure in which a small balloon is
inserted to open a blocked artery and restore blood flow
to the heart. A heart attack can occur if that blood flow
becomes completely blocked.
Highly-experienced Interventional Cardiologists on staff
at Community Medical Center are available to perform elective
angioplasties. These are the same trusted physicians who
have performed hundreds of life-saving angioplasty procedures
on an emergency basis.

Community Medical Center is offering
elective angioplasties through participation in the Atlantic
C-Port Elective Angioplasty research study in collaboration
with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Why
choose Community Medical Center?
Currently, Community Medical
Center performs 12% of New Jersey’s total emergent
angioplasties performed at facilities without on-site cardiac
surgery. Community Medical Center has been performing emergency
angioplasties since 2005 and its outcomes are equal or better
than the national average. Community Medical Center, supported
by the Saint Barnabas Health Care System and its renowned
Heart Centers, has demonstrated its high level of experience
and outstanding cardiac services in offering life-saving
angioplasty procedures on an emergency basis, which makes
them uniquely qualified to perform them on an elective basis.
Additionally, Community Medical
Center recently earned five-star ratings – the highest
possible – for the treatment of heart attack and heart
failure from HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent
health care ratings company. Community has also received
the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical
ExcellenceTM for five years in a row placing it in the Top
5% of hospitals in the nation.
In addition to the excellent
clinical services, you will also be able to remain in the
constant care of your trusted physician, while staying close
to home and to your family. This will help to ensure continuity
in your care and maximize your level of comfort.

About the Atlantic C-Port
Elective Angioplasty Study
The purpose of the Atlantic C-Port Elective
Angioplasty study is to compare clinical outcomes of those
treated with elective angioplasty at hospitals with on-site
cardiac surgery back-up versus those treated with elective
angioplasty at hospitals, such as Community Medical Center,
where there is no on-site back-up.
Prior to coming to the hospital for your
cardiac catheterization, you will be given information about
the Atlantic C-Port-E study. If you decide to participate
in the study, you will be given an informed consent to sign.
Once you provide your consent, you will be registered by
computer into the nationwide database for the study.
Due to the nature of the study, there is
a 25% chance that even though you may choose to have the
procedure performed at Community Medical Center, you may
be referred to a hospital with on-site cardiac surgery. This
will be determined through a computerized randomization process.
Seventy-five percent of the patients who register for the
study will be able to have the elective angioplasty performed
at Community Medical Center.
Once the procedure is complete, you will
receive periodic follow-up from a research nurse and coordinator
to track clinical outcomes.
At Community Medical Center, maintaining
good heart health is the primary goal. The expert staff of
cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, award-winning
cardiac nurses, and specially-trained cardiac technicians
is committed to providing the highest level of cardiac care
and quality patient service. Every member of the team maintains
the highest degree of clinical skill, caring for you with
compassion and the utmost respect.
