Saint
Barnabas Hospice: Our Friends Make All the Difference

West Orange, NJ – A stormy and gray
November afternoon was brightened by a group of dedicated
volunteers and shoppers during the Friends of Hospice 25th
Annual Fall Event at the Maplewood Country Club in Maplewood. The
anniversary luncheon, which featured WOR AM radio personality
Joan Hamburg as speaker, was sponsored by Karen and Ken Rosen.
More than 280 guests attended the event, which consisted
of fifteen upscale boutiques, raffle drawings and silent
auctions; a 3-night stay at the renowned Canyon Ranch Spa
in Lenox, MA was offered as the live auction prize. During
lunch, Joan Hamburg regaled the audience with her experiences
as a career journalist and broadcaster. All proceeds
benefit the patients and families served by the Saint Barnabas
Hospice and Palliative Care Center (SBHPCC), an affiliate
of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.
“Our guiding principles are the same today as
they were when we started -- to raise funds to support hospice
programs that are not government funded,” said Honi
Weiss, founder of the Friends of Hospice and a member of
the SBHPCC Board of Trustees. She, along with founding members
Ruthie Leeds, Mikelynn Salthouse, Janet Zuckerman and Lynn
Koggan, formed the backbone of the fundraising group for
many years.
“Since 1983, the Friends have organized luncheons,
galas and golf outings that together have raised more than
$2 million for the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative
Care Center,” said Lorraine Sciara, Executive Director,
SBHPCC. “It is their dedication that contributes
to the SBHPCC fulfilling its mission to provide superior
care to individuals and families facing advanced illness.”
