Volunteer Opportunities

Hospice volunteers are a special group of people who are available to provide supportive services for patients, caregivers, and our hospice staff. Men, women, students, business people, retirees and homemakers all donate their time to help our goal of being the premier hospice provider.

Some specific ways a volunteer may directly help  with patients and families:

  • Visiting with patients
  • Helping with personal correspondence, reading or playing games
  • Relieving a caregiver for short periods of time
  • Shopping
  • Providing child care
  • Preparing light meals or assisting at meal time
  • Providing transportation for physician office visits,  treatments, outings

Additionally, many volunteers prefer to help in the following areas:

  • Spiritual Support:  Volunteers can function in many ways in support of the spiritual needs of patients and families.  This can include Eucharistic Ministry,  Spiritual Care Volunteer training and assignments.
  • Bereavement Activities:  Volunteers are an active part of bereavement follow-up; either through direct support or through telephone contacts and counseling. Hospice photo quilt and memorial quilt programs, and other expressions of consolation and support involves volunteers, as well.
  • Clerical and Office Support:  Involvement in clerical and support function of  Hospice. This may include filing, computer work, financial data entry or Hospice publications.
  • Visitation and performances:   Volunteers often visit and participate in programs in nursing homes, patient’s homes  and other facilities, throughout the year and around the holidays. They can offer alternative therapies such as massage, Therapeutic Touch, Reiki and other areas of support to patients and families.
  • Fundraising: Assistance with the many fundraising events Hospice plans relies heavily on volunteer involvement and support. This include Friends of Hospice, golf outings, walkathons,  fashion shows,  art auctions, Tree of Life, holiday gift-wrap at malls and shopping centers, and many other innovative and exciting opportunities.
  • Thrift Shop:  Our shop at 51 N. Fullerton Ave, Montclair, NJ, telephone (973) 509-2060, is staffed by volunteers five days a week.  Contact us if you can dedicate time for this worthy effort.
  • Memorial Services: Involvement in planning and/or participation in Hospice Memorial services held throughout the year at our hospice centers.

If you have another idea of how you would like to assist with hospice care, please let us know. We are interested.

Volunteer Training

Volunteers working with patients and their families receive 18 hours of training from the Hospice Team before their participation in hospice care can begin, but all new volunteers are encouraged to participate in these classes, which prepare volunteers to work with the sick and dying, offer support to families and comfort the bereaved.

Volunteer training is offered throughout the year, according to the volume of interest, but spring and fall are the usual seasons to expect a new class to start.
