An is a procedure in which brain waves
are recorded on a machine similar to an EKG,
via electrodes that are placed on the scalp.
The test is not painful and takes about an hour.
The is a graphic record of the contraction of
a muscle as a result of electrical stimulation. EMG's are performed
at KMC by neurologists and must be scheduled directly through physician
offices.
Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP), Brainstem Evoked
Potentials (BSEP) and Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP) are procedures
that use light, sound and electrical stimuli to elicit various nerve
responses. Evoked potential testing takes from a half hour to two
hours, depending upon the type of test.
A 24-hour EEG records brain wave activity over a 24 hour period of
time by the use of a small recorder that does not interfere with normal
activities. A second visit is necessary to remove the recorder 24
hours later.
Outpatients are required to bring a physician prescription indicating
the type of test and reason for the test along with a physician referral,
if needed.
