Lakewood, NJ --- Kimball Medical Center foot and ankle surgeon Gerald Mauriello, Jr., D.P.M., M.A., recently completed a fellowship in Lower Extremity Traumatology at the prestigious Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics in Kurgan, Siberia.
Dr. Mauriello, one of a select group of physicians invited to attend the seminar, is one of just 75 American doctors who have been trained at the renowned Russian medical facility since it opened in 1971. The Center, located approximately 2500 miles east of Moscow, is named after orthopedist Dr. Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov who developed the principle of distraction osteogenesis. Ilizarov’s principle involves the induction of new bone formation between bone surfaces that are pulled apart using a specially developed external fixation device – the Ilizarov apparatus.
The Ilizarov apparatus developed in the early 1950s by Ilizarov is different from conventional external fixators because of its cylindrical shape and unique design that enables adjustments that can produce tension or compression, allowing for more precise correction of deformities, fracture repairs and even limb lengthening simultaneously in three dimensions. Used in many fields of medicine and known throughout the world, the Ilizarov method is a system of operative and non-operative techniques to successfully manage fractures and correct bone defects without the need for grafting. It can also be used to eliminate bone shortening and deformities, treat a variety of hand and foot conditions and joint problems as well.
At the Center, Dr. Mauriello received advanced training in the diverse use of the Ilizarov technique and participated in numerous upper and lower extremity trauma and deformity corrective surgeries utilizing the Ilizarov method of treatment.
Dr. Mauriello – who received initial training in the Ilizarov technique during his residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital, in New York in 2004 – is looking forward to putting his additional skills and knowledge into practice at Kimball Medical Center as one of the only foot and ankle surgeons in the southern Jersey trained to utilize the Ilizarov method of treatment.
