Kimball Medical Center to Recognize National Rehab Awareness Week
September 22- 26

Lakewood, NJ ---- Kimball Medical Center will join with the National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation, and more than 6,500 facilities this week in a nationwide celebration of National Rehab Awareness Week.

“The week is an opportunity to focus the community’s attention on the power and possibility rehabilitation can provide and it’s ability to restore independence and enable people to overcome injury or illness and live life to the fullest,” says David Terlizzi, director of Rehabilitation Services at Kimball Medical Center’s Institute for Rehabilitative and Occupational Health Services.

The national observance also salutes the determination of the nearly 50 million Americans with disabilities, according to Terlizzi. “In addition, it’s an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary efforts of rehab professionals, provide a forum for education, and explore new ways to fulfill needs that still exist,” he adds.

Each year, Kimball Medical Center offers a comprehensive array of inpatient rehabilitation to more than 13,000 patients, with services that include physical and occupational therapy, speech and language pathology and audiology services.

“We offer diagnostic and therapeutic services to help people become as functional as possible in their individual lives,” explains Terlizzi. “This can range from the young athlete who has suffered a sports injury and needs to restore function so they’re able to get back in the game, to an older individual who may have suffered a stroke or fractured their hip and wants to be able to regain their mobility and independence and return home. So we provide a large variety of services to all different ages and all different abilities. The key is to help our patients regain their ability to function in their individual environment,” he adds.

In addition to the array of inpatient rehabilitation services offered at Kimball Medical Center, the hospital offers comprehensive outpatient services through its Institute for Rehabilitative and Occupational Health Services. The facility, conveniently located on the hospital’s campus at 500 River Avenue in Lakewood, offers a continuum of rehabilitative care that crosses a multitude of specialties including post-stroke care, sports injury rehabilitation, pediatric rehab programs, speech, language and audiology services and a corporate health and workers compensation program. Last year, according to Terlizzi, the Institute provided some 12,500 outpatient visits.

“The Institute provides area residents with convenient access to some of the region's most specialized physicians, nurses, therapists and support staff all under one roof,” says Terlizzi. “Our state-of-the-art facility offers a full array of services for people of all ages and abilities,” he notes.

Restoring each patient’s ability to achieve their individual daily life routines is once again the sole focus of each of the facility’s team members, according to Terlizzi. “Whether the goal of therapy is to relieve chronic pain, speak clearly again, walk unassisted, run a marathon or return to work, each program is designed with the individual in mind,” he adds.

“The Institute has the capability to incorporate state-of-the-art balance training, comprehensive assessment tools, simulated home-making areas, and other exercise, therapeutic and diagnostic equipment in conjunction with our team of highly-skilled therapists to prevent further injury, improve function, promote healing and the maintenance of good health.”

By offering a continuum of care, customized therapy, and access to the latest advances in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, Kimball Medical Center’s team stands ready to help every patient return to their optimal level of function and good health. “We offer exceptional inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services and programs,” says Terlizzi. “Our staff is highly skilled and dedicated to instilling hope, a sense of achievement and ensuring success as they work together with our patients to restore their highest functional ability,” he adds.
