LAKEWOOD, NJ - According to American
Social Health Association, 19 million new cases of sexually
transmitted infections (STIs) occur in the United States
each year, about half of them ages 15-24 years. In
addition, more than half of all people in the U.S. will have
an STI at some point in their lifetime.
Alfred Parchment,
MD, an Ob/Gyn on staff at Kimball Medical Center explains
that most common STIs can be easily detected. “With
a simple urinalysis, swab or blood test, STDs can be found,” he
states. “However, patients need to be open and
honest with their physicians regarding possible symptoms
and their sexual health.”
According to Dr. Parchment, there are several steps you
can take to prevent contracting an STD or STI:
- Abstinence – Not having sex
- Monogamy – having sex with only one partner, who
is only having sex with you
- Use latex condoms –correct and consistent use of
a latex condom
- Get tested – both partners should get tested before
engaging in any type of sexual interaction
- Get Regular, yearly check-ups
- Talk to your physician about your sexual activity
“Taking these precautions will certainly help prevent
contracting an STI,” says Dr. Parchment. “Be
sure to speak to your healthcare provider about your sexual
activity and if you haven’t done so already, be sure
to schedule your annual exam.”
