Guidelines for Breast Examination and Mammography

The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center Follows These American Cancer Society-Endorsed Guidelines for Breast Examination and Mammography:

• Monthly breast self-examinations starting at the age of 20. Look for lumps, thickenings, nipple discharges, skin changes or any other signs of change.
  
  
• A baseline mammogram by age 40 that can be used for comparison with subsequent mammograms.
  
  
• A mammogam every year beginning after age 40.
  
  
• A physician's breast examination every three years for women age 20 to 40.
  
  
• A physician's breast examination every year after age 40.
