Pediatric Emergency Services

Providing Critically Ill and Injured Children with Specialized Care and Treatment

Providing critical and emergency care to children requires the expertise of highly trained specialists in pediatric critical care and pediatric emergency medicine. At Monmouth Medical Center, a dedicated pediatric emergency department ensures that critically ill or injured children will receive that highly specialized care from the moment they enter the hospital. Additionally, the 6-bed pediatric intensive care unit is dedicated to caring for critically ill children who require around-the-clock attention from an interdisciplinary team of specially trained health care providers.

Through a partnership with the renowned pediatric critical care team of The Children’s Hospital at St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, Monmouth’s Pediatric Critical Care Unit provides continuous coverage on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis. Board-certified pediatric intensivists work alongside pediatric resident physicians and other members of the care team, including registered nurses and respiratory therapists who are specially trained in pediatric intensive care and are certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Monmouth’s pediatric critical care team is committed to providing the highest quality, compassionate care.

Our Pediatric Emergency Team
Monmouth’s dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department is staffed by a team of board-certified physicians — pediatricians with fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine. All Monmouth Medical Center Emergency Department physicians are certified in advanced cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support and pediatric advanced life support; this has earned the department designation by the American Heart Association as an advanced cardiac life support providing agency for children as well as adults. The physicians are supported by a team of specially trained nurses who are certified in pediatric advanced life support and highly skilled technicians. Monmouth treats more than 15,000 children each year in the Emergency Department, and the hospital consistently ranks among the top 10 hospitals in New Jersey — and among the top 10 percent of emergency departments in the nation — for patient satisfaction.

There are many times when a child in the emergency department or intensive care unit benefits from the expertise of a consulting pediatric specialist. At Monmouth Medical Center, a “Center of Excellence in Pediatric Care” includes pediatricians with subspecialty training.

Offering Additional Support When You Need It Most
During these stressful times, Monmouth offers parents and guardians various support services during a child’s hospitalization. A social worker or case manager is available for consultation shortly after a child’s admission to discuss special services that could help to meet a family’s specific needs. The social worker provides ongoing support throughout a child’s hospital stay. In addition, psychologists and child life specialists can be called upon to offer assistance.
