Monmouth Medical Regional Newborn Center Celebrates
40 Years of Caring

Big Steps for Little Feet to benefit NICU at MOnmouth Medical CenterProviding premature and high-risk infants with the specialized care they need to grow has been the mission of the Regional Newborn Center (RNC) at Monmouth Medical Center for 40 years.

Last fall, Monmouth brought together four decades of RNC "graduates" as it celebrated the 40th anniversary of New Jersey's first newborn intensive care unit. The celebration — which drew more than 300 people from throughout the state — featured “decade” tents where those cared for in the RNC and their families could gather with staff members who provided the care during their stays. Additionally, the event featured a complimentary barbeque and entertainment.

Monmouth Medical Center's 29-bed RNC is a state-designated regional perinatal center — the busiest and largest of its kind in Monmouth and Ocean counties, treating about 500 infants each year from throughout central New Jersey for such problems as prematurity, low-birth weight, acute illness and congenital disorders, and for those requiring emergency surgery, including neurosurgical procedure.

The center is a leader in its highly specialized field — attaining a high degree of success that is reflected in state statistics that show Monmouth has one of the highest infant survival rates among neonatal ICUs in New Jersey. Nearly 98 percent of babies who receive care in Monmouth's RNC are able to thrive so that they can be brought home by their parents.

The Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center’s littlest patients will once again be the benefactors of a walkathon, as the third annual Big Steps for Little Feet kicks off September 13 on The Great Lawn at the Pier Village, Long Branch.

The event, which celebrates the very special graduates of Monmouth’s renowned Regional Newborn Center, has drawn more than 400 walkers annually. Supported by the staff of the RNC and Monmouth Medical Center Foundation and spearheaded by NICU nurse Megan Kroeze, the 2008 Big Steps for Little Feet raised $66,000 in support of the RNC.

“Our thanks to Megan Kroeze, who makes this event possible,” says Lu-Ann Russell, director of special events for Monmouth Medical Center Foundation. “Her dedication and passion for the RNC are second to none.”
