Because Babies Don't Come With Directions. . .

Expecting a baby is an exciting time affecting the lives of the prospective parents, other children, family members and friends. At Monmouth Medical Center, The Department of Community Health Education offers a variety of programs designed to meet the needs of parents-to-be and those who care about them.

Please register during your first trimester of pregnancy to assure your choice of classes.

Baby Fair

Because babies don’t come with directions, Monmouth Medical Center holds Baby Fairs, featuring health care professionals from The Lewis M. and Judith Ann Eisenberg Family Center, who answer questions from parents-to-be and those considering starting a family. Information on nutrition, living a healthy lifestyle, medications, alcohol, smoking, avoiding workplace hazards, folic acid, prenatal testing, fetal growth and development, cord blood banking for baby’s future, child birth classes, and choices in maternity care is available. Tours of the family center and nursery are given. Refreshments will be served, and there will be free gifts. Free.
(Children under 14 not permitted.)

Tours of the family center are conducted monthly. A Childbirth educator will accompany you and answer your questions. Free.

Breastfeeding Today

Breastfeeding offers many health benefits to babies and their mothers. Designed to build confidence in expectant mothers, this program focuses on the process and techniques of breast-feeding including getting started, building your milk supply, pumping and storing milk, and combining working and breastfeeding. Expectant fathers are invited, too. Fee: $50.

One Thursday evening.

Preparation for Childbirth

This five-session program prepares each expectant mother and her support person for the birth experience. Topics include body changes during pregnancy; labor, birth, and anesthesia options; and planning and preparation for baby, along with information on important choices for banking cord blood for baby’s future, now available through Monmouth Medical Center. A strong emphasis is placed on relaxation techniques, Lamaze breathing techniques, comfort measures and labor support. A tour of the family center is included. Fee: $125.

One-Day Preparation for Childbirth

This class is geared for those with busy lifestyles or fluctuating schedules who are unable to commit to a five-week series. The program will focus on what to expect during labor and birth, anesthesia choices, relaxation, Lamaze breathing techniques, and coping strategies and offer new information on banking cord blood for baby’s future through Monmouth Medical Center. A childbirth film is shown and a tour of the family center is included. The day is busy and intense. Advance reading required — for the highly motivated.
Fee: $179. Breakfast and lunch included.

Two-Day Preparation for Childbirth

Featuring the same program content as One-Day program (see above), this course is presented in a two-session format. Fee: $150. Continental breakfast is included both days.

Two-Day Marvelous Multiples

This prenatal education course is designed for those expecting twins, triplets or more and should be attended early in the second trimester of pregnancy. Topics to be discussed include nutrition, labor and delivery, anesthesia options, Cesarean section, relaxation techniques, risks and complications of multiple birth pregnancies, and the value of banking your babies’ cord blood through Monmouth Medical Center, as well as recovery and caring for multiples. One session includes a tour of the Regional Newborn Center (neonatal intensive care unit). Fee: $150.

Childbirth Update / VBAC

This program provides an update and refresher for those who have previously participated in childbirth preparation classes. This is an opportunity to review and practice prepared childbirth techniques and relaxation skills, discuss the newest aspects of obstetrics, and learn about options now available at Monmouth Medical Center for banking your baby’s cord blood. It will also prepare expectant parents who are planning for a vaginal birth after a C-section (VBAC). Fee: $40.

Cesarean Birth Education

This program will prepare expectant parents to share in the birth of their baby by C-section. Discussion centers on what to expect physically and emotionally, all aspects of delivery, and new options in banking your baby’s cord blood through Monmouth Medical Center. Fee: $40.

Baby Cares Basics

During this two-session program for expectant parents, the focus is on care of the new baby including bathing; dressing; feeding; infant growth and development; the benefits of, and your options for, banking baby’s cord blood; safety; decisions about returning to work; and other adjustments to life with baby for new parents. Fee: $80.

Two Saturday afternoons or two Thursday evenings.


Prenatal Rhythmic Exercise Program

This five-week, 10-session program of exercise designed for the pregnant woman is geared to each individual’s fitness level. It includes gentle, rhythmic stretching, light cardiovascular exercise, conditioning of the muscles used during labor and delivery, and relaxation techniques.
Fee: $100. Doctor’s permission required.

Make Room for Baby (age 3 to 5)

This class is designed especially for preschool-age children preparing for the birth of a sibling. Included in this class are a discussion about babies and a movie about becoming a big brother or sister. The children, accompanied by their parents, will have a look into the nursery windows.
Fee: $40.

Becoming a Big Brother or a Big Sister (age 6 and up)

This program is specially suited to school-age children who are preparing for a new baby in the family. The focus will be on helping mom
and dad at home, including participation in caring for the new sibling. Some basic information about fetal development and birth is included.
Participants also make a simple craft to take home. Parents will accompany their child for a short tour of the nursery. Fee: $40.
Please bring a favorite doll or stuffed animal for practice.

Grandparents Program

Grandparents-to-be may feel that prenatal care, preparation for childbirth and child care practices have changed dramatically since they were new parents. During this program, grandparents have the opportunity to meet with a prenatal educator and discuss current trends in childbirth and infant care so that they can help support their own children as they become parents. Also covered will be the latest information on cord blood banking and its potential benefits for protecting baby’s future, now available through the Monmouth Medical Center. A tour of The Eisenberg Family Center also will be given. Fee: $30 per participant, $40 per couple. Gift certificates available.

Adoptive Parenting

Are you planning to adopt? We’d like to help you prepare for your child’s arrival. Classes include information on infant care, feeding and
formula preparation, baby equipment, safety and child growth and development during the first year of life. Fee: $100 per couple.

Mother-to-Mother Support Group

Now that you have your baby, join with other new mothers to talk about what you’re experiencing. Group discussions will be led by a registered nurse. Topics will include adjustments to parenthood, feeding your baby, infant massage, learning from your baby and soothing an infant. There will be time for information sharing and questions. Newborns to 6 months of age and fathers are welcome too. Free. No older children please.

Postpartum Rhythmic Exercise Program

During this five-week, 10-session program, light, rhythmic exercise is geared toward toning, strengthening and conditioning with
emphasis placed on abdominal and back muscles. Come share a special time with other new moms and babies. Program includes relaxation techniques as well as gentle infant massage. Fee: $100. Start at least six weeks after delivery. Doctor’s permission required.

Two mornings each week.

Infant Massage

This four-week program presents information on the theory of infant massage, bonding benefits and ways to vary massage techniques as
your baby grows. With the guidance of a massage instructor, you will practice massage techniques to help your baby relax. Massage book
and oil will be provided. Fee: $80.

Parenting Young Children Through STEP

Using the nationally known S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) approach to developing parenting skills, this five-session
program focuses on helping parents gain a better understanding of the needs and behaviors of young children from infancy to age 6. It
addresses such topics as communication, encouraging cooperation, effective discipline, and nurturing the social and emotional development of children — all of which can help build healthy family relationships for a lifetime. Fee: $75 per person; $100 per couple.
