- Monmouth
Medical Center, Long Branch, has been licensed as a regional
children's hospital.
The licensure is a "natural extension of our already extensive
and comprehensive pediatric program that has paved the way from
which others emanate," said Dr. Margaret C. Fisher, medical director
of The Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center, in a hospital
news release.
The state Assembly and Senate approved the licensure Dec. 28,
hospital spokeswoman Renee Amellio said.
More than 35 years ago, Monmouth Medical became the first hospital
in the state to set up a neonatal intensive-care unit to care
for premature infants, according to the hospital.
The hospital treats more than 500 infants a year for conditions
including low birth weight, acute life-threatening illnesses
and congenital disorders, Fisher said.
The Children's Hospital has more than 140 pediatricians in 26
specialties, said Monmouth Medical Center's executive director,
Dr. Frank J. Vozos.
"Its level of care is further evident with specialty services
not provided anywhere else in the region," Vozos said.
