- Monmouth
Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care
System, has been licensed by the state of New Jersey as an
official children's hospital for Monmouth and Ocean counties
- as approved by both the state assembly and senate.
Monmouth Medical Center, one of the largest academic (university-level)
medical centers in New Jersey, has been an active presence in
the community for more than 100 years. "Our reputation as a leading
academic medical center is supported by our position as the first
in the region on many fronts - from laparoscopic surgery to digital
mammography -- and we continue to exceed the expectations of
quality and progressive care for the communities we serve," says
Frank J. Vozos, M.D., Executive Director of Monmouth Medical
Center.
Nationally and internationally renowned pediatrician Margaret
C. Fisher, M.D., Medical Director of The Children's Hospital
at Monmouth Medical Center, adds, "Our licensure as a Children's
Hospital is a natural extension to our already extensive and
comprehensive pediatric program that has paved the way from which
others emanate." More than 35 years ago, Monmouth Medical Center
set the stage for exceptional pediatric health care in this state
by becoming the first hospital in New Jersey and the first community
hospital in the United States to establish a Level III neonatal
intensive care unit (NICU), demonstrating its knowledge and understanding
of specialized pediatric care.
Since then, Monmouth Medical Center has become the leader in
this field, treating annually more than 500 infants for such
conditions as prematurity, low birth weight, acute life-threatening
illnesses and congenital disorders, as well as providing delicate
surgeries. "Our standing as the first NICU in New Jersey set
the groundwork from which we have built the most complete children's
hospital in the region," according to Dr. Fisher.
The Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center is a leader
in pediatric health care, benefiting from Dr. Fisher's expertise.
As a highly regarded pediatrician amongst her peers nation-wide
and a prominent and influential member of the Executive Committee
of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Section of Infectious
Diseases and twice a member of the Committee of Infectious Diseases
(Red Book Committee), Dr. Fisher helps establish national guidelines
and standards for quality health care for children and adolescents.
This quality of care is evident in The Children's Hospital standing
as a member of the National Association of Children's Hospitals
and Related Institutions (NACHRI), an organization that serves
as a collective voice for health systems devoted to the health
and well-being of children, no matter how sick or poor.
Dr. Vozos says the academic (university-level) medical center
is exceptionally proud of this new licensure. "As a core regional
campus of Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia,
a nationally recognized medical school, Monmouth Medical Center
and The Children's Hospital provide cutting-edge treatments and
procedures, supported by state-of-the art technology and 'round-the-clock
quality care, to ensure that the community receives the most
progressive and comprehensive treatment available."
He points out that the community has direct access to a children's
hospital with more than 140 pediatric specialists who concentrate
in 26 specialties including adolescent medicine, allergy and
immunology, anesthesiology, cardiology, emergency medicine, gastroenterology,
hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, orthopedics, and surgery
among many others. "The breadth and depth of The Children's Hospital
expands beyond the Long Branch facility with a satellite center
at the Women and Children's Specialty Center in Lakewood, which
brings specialized obstetric and pediatric services and care
directly to Ocean County residents," Dr. Fisher adds.
The Children's Hospital's complete level of care is further
evident with specialty services not provided anywhere else in
the region.
The Children's Hospital is home to one of the state's five Valerie
Funds for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders, one of the
largest and most advanced pediatric oncology and hematology networks
in the country, where young patients are able to receive treatment
near their homes without having to greatly alter their normal
routines.
The Regional Cleft Palate Center at The Children's Hospital,
the only one in the region and one of five centers in the state
established by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior
Services, is made up of a team of specialists who take a personalized
approach to the treatment of cleft and lip palate and oral-facial
abnormalities.
Specialized services are offered to children with cystic fibrosis
through The Children's Hospital's Cystic Fibrosis Center, one
of two centers in New Jersey. Monmouth was the first hospital
in the state and only one of 25 in the country to offer Infant
Pulmonary Function Testing, a procedure used to diagnose and
monitor lung function in children with acute or chronic pulmonary
disorders, such as cystic fibrosis.
Monmouth also has the region's only state-designated Children's
Crisis Intervention Service for the inpatient treatment of children
and adolescents with acute, emotional, behavioral, or psychiatric
problems.
The pediatric emergency department at The Children's Hospital,
is the first and only one in the region to have pediatricians
board certified in emergency medicine treat young patients, further
supported by a Children's Transportation Emergency Program dedicated
to transporting critically ill babies and children from outlying
community hospitals to The Children's Hospital's level III NICU
and pediatric intensive care unit.
The specialized care and services provided by The Children's
Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center is enhanced through the TouchPoints
program -- a curriculum of guiding principles that value and
understand the relationship between the parent and the practitioner.
As an academic (university-level) medical center, Monmouth Medical
Center was the first in the country and is the only one in the
state to incorporate the TouchPoints Program into its pediatric
residency program.
"We are grateful to the community for helping us achieve this
monumental accomplishment for the benefit of families throughout
Monmouth and Ocean counties. The depth and breadth of our pediatric
services is extensive and we are delighted the state has recognized
our long-term commitment to quality and specialized care for
children by licensing us a children's hospital," says Dr. Vozos.
Dr. Fisher agrees, "As the area's premier teaching institution,
we not only provide the most cutting-edge treatment to our littlest
of patients, but we are educating the future pediatricians of
tomorrow to adhere to the same high standards of quality and
care on which we have built our reputation."
Monmouth Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas
Health Care System, is a 527-bed academic medical center, located
in Long Branch, NJ. In addition to more than 20,000 adult and
pediatric inpatients and more than 12,000 surgeries performed
annually, Monmouth Medical Center handles 40,000 patient visits
through its many outpatient departments and ambulatory services.
A regional campus of Drexel University College of Medicine, it
is one of New Jersey's largest academic medical centers.
The Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center, a member
of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related
Institutions, has more than 140 pediatric specialists in 26 subspecialties
and ranks among the top 3 hospitals in the state for pediatric
surgery. It provides specialized pediatric services, many of
which are provided only at The Children's Hospital.
Keeping abreast of the latest medical developments and the most-advanced
technology comes with being part of a respected teaching hospital.
