MONNOUTH MEDICAL CENTER AGAIN TAKES GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT IN DELIVERY OF MOST-ADVANCED RADIATION THERAPY

LONG BRANCH, NJ, December 2009 — Monmouth Medical Center’s world-class Institute for Advanced Radiation Oncology has once again gained global attention for its delivery of cutting-edge cancer treatment.

TomoTherapy Inc. recently named Monmouth Medical Center’s Institute for Advanced Radiation Oncology their official physician global training site. Monmouth has been selected as the first Global site. As a global physician training site, Monmouth will offer 10 three-day trainings each year, and the money raised through the training will be used for a radiation education fund.

An advanced cancer treatment platform that optimizes the delivery of radiation for tumors, TomoTherapy technology was unveiled at Monmouth Medical Center in 2008.  It combines precise 3-D imaging from CT scans with highly targeted radiation beams. Over the last decade, Monmouth’s Institute for Advanced Radiation Oncology has taken the spotlight for its pioneering role in the delivery of the most-advanced breakthroughs in 3-D conformal radiotherapy — which is dramatically improving cancer treatment at leading institutions throughout the United States.

Physicians Mitchell Weiss, M.D., and Sang Sim, M.D., along with physicist Jack Yang, Ph.D., all of whom are members of Monmouth’s radiation oncology team, have also gained international, national and state recognition for their clinical research into advanced methods of radiation therapy.

“It is quite an honor to be part of such international forums, where highly respected professionals from around the world come together to learn about the latest developments in the field of radiation oncology,” says Dr. Weiss, chairman of radiation oncology at Monmouth. “It is a testament to our success at Monmouth in providing our patients with the most-effective treatment utilizing the most-advanced systems available in the medical community today.”

The new training course was piloted in November 2009 at Monmouth Medical Center. Four physicians from TomoTherapy treatment centers around the world attended the three-day course focused on peer-to-peer learning. According to James Coster, M.D., a radiation oncologist with US Oncology, Inc., affiliate Kansas City Cancer Center, the new program addresses an important need. "From expanding what I consider an appropriate range of applications to improving treatment planning strategies, the M.D. training course was extremely valuable to me as a new user," said Dr. Coster. "Instruction like this should accelerate one's ascent up the learning curve for this unique technology."

In 1998, Monmouth was chosen as an intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) “elite model site” for Siemens Medical Solutions, the Malvern, Pa.-based health care supplier that developed the system that first integrated many of Monmouth’s leading-edge radiation oncology technologies. As a result of this status, it hosted hundreds of site visits over the last decade, welcoming radiation oncologists, medical physicists and other cancer specialists from throughout the world to explore the process and benefits of establishing an IMRT practice in a community hospital.

Gaining international, national and state recognition for its clinical research into advanced methods of radiation therapy in recent years, the Institute for Advanced Radiation Oncology’s achievements paved the way for Monmouth Medical Center to become the first hospital in Monmouth County to earn accreditation from the American College of Radiation Oncology for the quality, safety and appropriateness of its radiation therapy.
