Medical Oncologists
Our Cancer Center's mission is to meet the physical and emotional needs of our patients. To achieve this goal, we have assembled a team of professionals representing a broad range of disciplines who are highly experienced in and specifically dedicated to cancer care.

Radiation Oncologists
Physicians in our Radiation Oncology Department participate in weekly multidisciplinary Tumor Conferences to discuss particular cases with a team of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists and pathologists to ensure that treatments selected are the result of a team of experts focusing on an individual patient’s specific disease.

Surgical Oncologists
A vital component of our comprehensive, integrated cancer care team, the Division of Surgical Oncology works very closely with Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, and other oncology specialists to provide coordinated, multidisciplinary care for patients with cancer.


Dr Alice Cohen, MD, FACP, Director of the Frederick B. Cohen Comprehensive Cancer and Blood Disorders CenterAlice Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.P., Director of the Frederick B. Cohen Comprehensive Cancer & Blood Disorders Center. Dr. Cohen is director of the Comprehensive Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center, as well as section chief of Breast Cancer Services. She is an investigator with NSABP, ECOG and the Moffitt Clinical Trials Group. She is the principal investigator of the Craft Program, funded by Susan G. Komen for the cure and a grant from the Avon foundation for outreach and treatment of women with breast cancer. Her breast team is aided by a dedicated breast cancer social worker and a breast cancer advanced practice nurse.

Dr. Cohen is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and The Chicago Medical School. She completed her internal medicine training at NYU and fellowship in hematology and oncology at the George Washington University and Columbia University Medical Center. She is an Associate Clinical Professor of medicine at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons and board certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology. She is the director of the Comprehensive hemophilia treatment center, and program director for the hematology/oncology fellowship training program.

Dr. Frederick B. Cohen, MD, FACP, distinguished oncologistFrederick B. Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.P., a distinguished oncologist, opened the first cancer clinic in New Jersey in 1965 at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and is the former director of the Medical Center’s Flo Okin Oncology Center. Dr. Cohen earned his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey, his master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Chicago Medical School in Illinois. He completed an internship at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in New York and then came to Newark Beth Israel and completed his residency in internal medicine and hematology. Since 1958, Dr. Cohen has been an attending physician on Newark Beth Israel Medical Staff.

Dr. Cohen is board certified in internal medicine and oncology, Dr. Cohen has trained many of New Jersey’s practicing internists and oncologists and has been actively involved in oncology research through the years. He is also a member of numerous medical societies and professional organizations, including the American Society of Human Genetics, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research, his articles and abstracts have been published in numerous medical journals.

Dr Rogers-Phillips, Section Chief for the Prostate & Genitourinary OncologyElois Gwendolyn Rogers-Phillips, M.D., Section Chief for the Prostate and genitourinary Oncology has been a member of the hematology/oncology department at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center since 2003, following 25 years of private practice in Newark. She is a graduate of Indiana University and Howard University College of Medicine. She received her post-graduate training from Yale New-Haven Medical Center and Saint Michaels Medical Center in Newark. As section chief for cancers of the prostate and genitourinary system Dr. Rogers Phillips will be combining her efforts with the surgical and radiation oncology departments to offer robotic surgery and conformal radiation for early advanced lesions, and innovative chemotherapy protocols to improve the outcomes in patients with prostate, kidney and bladder cancers.

Dr Lori SchleicherLori Schleicher, M.D., Section Chief, Gastrointestinal Oncology, was recently appointed as an attending physician in the division of hematology/oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Her clinical interests include the management of colorectal, pancreatic, gastric, and esophageal cancer. Dr. Schleicher is actively enrolling interested patients on Colorectal and Esophageal protocols.

Dr. Schleicher earned her medical degree from the University of Rochester school of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY. She completed her postdoctoral training in Internal Medicine at Boston Medical Center, Boston University in Boston, MA and pursued a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, NY. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and hematology/oncology.

Dr Maya ShahMaya Shah, M.D., Section Chief, Leukemia/Lymphoma Service has been an attending physician in the division of hematology/oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for 10 years. Board certified in internal medicine hematology/oncology, Dr. Shah received her medical degree from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, India. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at North General Hospital, an affiliate of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. She pursued a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She stayed on as faculty at Montefiore Medical Center before moving to New Jersey.

She is a member of ASH and ASCO and has a special interest in clinical research involving management of hematological malignancies including lymphoproliferative disorders, leukemia and myeloma.

Dr Susan TalbotSusan Talbot, MD, F.R.A.C.P., Section Chief, Thoracic Oncology has been an attending physician in the division of hematology/medical oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center since November 2005. Her clinical interests include non small cell and small cell lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma, and thymic.

Dr. Talbot earned her medical degree from the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia. She completed her postdoctoral training in Internal Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, in New York, NY. During her fellowship and subsequent post-doctoral research she conducted clinical and laboratory-based research on malignant mesothelioma. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, hematology and medical oncology.

Dr. Andrew EisenbergerAndrew Eisenberger, M.D., Section Chief, Benign Hematology joined the division of Hematology/Oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in July 2008 after completing his fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Columbia University Medical Center. He is a graduate of Columbia College and received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein School of medicine. He serves as the Director of Newark Beth Israel’s Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center as well as leading the division’s benign hematology section. His main interests include: sickle cell anemia, clotting disorders, and blood-related cancers such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndromes. Dr. Eisenberger is board certified in Internal Medicine and hematology. He is the director of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Treatment Center. Dr. Eisenberger speaks Spanish.

Ralph M. Eastman, MDRalph M. Eastman, MD
Dr. Eastman received his degree in Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1973.  He completed two years in surgical residency training at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York.  He was a Neurosurgical fellow and resident at Albert Einstein in the Bronx, New York from 1974 to 1977.  After completing a residency in Radiation Oncology at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ, he became an attending in that department. He served there from 1980 to 2004.  During that tenure, he was also a Clinical Instructor at St. Barnabas Medical Center Educational Program in Radiation Therapy Technology and also trained residents in Radiation Oncology.

Prior to joining the staff at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in 2007, Dr. Eastman was also employed by The Center for Cancer and Hemologic Disease in Marlton, New Jersey as Radiation Oncologist and was on the staff of Virtue-West Jersey Health Care System which was associated with Fox Chase Cancer Center in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Eastman is experienced in IMRT, Conformal as well as non-coplanar treatment planning, Intravascular brachytherapy, Gynecological LDR and HDR Brachytherapy, Pediatric Oncology, Endocavitary HDR Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiotherapy, Tomotherapy and Rapid Arc Radiotherapy.

Dr. Eastman received his Board Certification in Therapeutic Radiology (Radiation Oncology) in June 1980.  He is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.  He has been a member of the American College of Radiation Oncology, American College of Radiology as well as other professional state and county professional societies.

Dr. Eastman is licensed in New Jersey and New York.

Robert Ivker, DORobert Ivker, DO, Chairman
Dr. Robert Ivker, the Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Ivker joined the department in 1996. Prior to coming to Newark Beth Israel, Dr. Ivker was an attending physician at Community Medical Center an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.
Dr. Ivker did his training at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City where he served as Chief Resident in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He received his Medical degree from the University of Des Moines, College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Ivker has made clinical research and patient access to state-of-the-art cancer treatments his highest priority. The Department of Radiation Oncology at Newark Beth Israel is one of a select few in the state of New Jersey that is affiliated with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) through its relationship with Thomas Jefferson University. Due to this affiliation the department has access to the most up to date and most promising "cutting edge" treatment protocols, designed to explore new methods of treatment. The goal of these protocols is simple, increase the chance of cure while reducing the risk of side effects.

Dr. Ivker is a member of The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO), as well as other professional societies. He has and continues to present his work on head and neck, breast, and prostate cancer at national and international meetings. Recently, a chapter on gastrointestinal malignancies (gastric and pancreas) that Dr. Ivker co-authored was published in a textbook for other physicians. He is Board certified by the American Board of Radiology for the practice of Radiation Oncology and is consistently recognized as performing "the first of its kind" procedures in the state. Caring nursing and dedicated healthcare professionals round out a compassionate, multidisciplinary team approach to cancer patients and their families.
