Surgical Oncology

The Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Division of Surgical Oncology provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for adult patients with cancer, including tumors of the breast, lymph nodes, thyroid and parathyroid glands, esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum, adrenal glands, liver and bile ducts, pancreas, and other major organs; as well as skin cancers, soft tissue sarcomas, and hereditary cancer syndromes.

Working closely with medical and radiation oncologists, and other oncology specialists, Dr. Robert A. Wascher, Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology, directly oversees the planning and delivery of care that is individually optimized to address each patient’s unique healthcare needs.

Robert A. Wascher, MDRobert A. Wascher, MD, FACS

Dr. Wascher brings his expertise in the surgical management of cancer to the wide range of adult oncology services provided by the Frederick B. Cohen Comprehensive Cancer Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. As a member of Newark Beth Israel’s integrated cancer care team, Dr. Wascher offers advanced surgical approaches that include minimally invasive surgery and breast-conserving surgery, as well as extensive research and teaching experience.

Dr. Wascher is a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American College of Surgeons. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (Honors in Research) from the University of California at Irvine, and his medical degree (magna cum laude) from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, NE. He completed a surgical internship at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, CA; a neurosurgery fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX; a surgical residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI; and a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, CA.

Dr. Wascher served in the U.S. Army from 1976 to 2006, achieving the rank of Colonel before retiring this year. He was the recipient of numerous military honors throughout his career, including the prestigious Legion of Merit Medal, awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service and achievements.

Prior to joining Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Dr. Wascher was Director of Surgical Oncology and Director of Research for the General Surgery Residency Program at Tripler Army Medical Center. He had also served as an adjunct associate professor of surgery at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, MD, and as a clinical associate professor at the Cancer Prevention and Control Program, Cancer Research Center at the University of Hawaii. Currently, Dr. Wascher is also an adjunct associate professor of surgery at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ).

The author and co-author of numerous clinical articles, abstracts, book chapters, and online articles, Dr. Wascher has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, British Journal of Cancer, Current Surgery, Cancer Treatment & Research, Proceedings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Surgigcal Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, Cancer, and the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, among other prestigious journals. His clinical presentations have included diverse topics in molecular and clinical oncology, including breast and gastrointestinal cancers, melanoma, sarcoma, and endocrine tumors, and hereditary cancer syndromes.  Dr. Wascher is also the author of a long-running and very popular health education website (http://doctorwascher.com)

Dr. Wascher is a member of many professional societies, including the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Authors Guild, and the NIH Community Clinical Oncology Program, among others. He has served as principal investigator on several leading clinical trials. Dr. Wascher also has a special interest in ethnic variations in cancer biology and epidemiology, as well as cancer prevention strategies at the molecular level.
