Press Releases - 2006 KATHERINA CANALES, M.D. JOINS GERIATRIC TEAM AT NEWARK, NJ - Katherina Canales, M.D., of Iselin, has joined the staff at the Center for Geriatric Health Care at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. In her role, Dr. Canales will be responsible for the assessment, consultation, medical care and treatment of geriatric (senior) patients. In addition, she will use her bilingual skills to meet the communication needs of Spanish speaking patients. Dr. Canales received her medical degree from Saint George's University in the West Indies. She completed post doctoral training in internal medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and her geriatric fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Canales has served as a research assistant at several medical facilities including Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida, the University of Miami and Tulane University in Louisiana. In 2005, Dr. Canales presented three posters at the American Geriatric Society's National Conference focusing on osteoporosis treatment in men; hip fractures in elderly women and the prevalence rates of deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and pulmonary embolism associated with mortality in nursing homes and non-nursing home admissions. The Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for Geriatric Care, located at 156 Lyons Avenue, provides comprehensive and coordinated health services for older adults medical, social/psychological and rehabilitative needs. Seniors are assessed and treated in one central location. The center also provides a variety of screening programs that are open to the public including proper nutrition, hypertension, heart disease and physical therapy screenings.
