Press Releases - 2008 Physicians Benefit from Expo of Technology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Newark, N.J.—Recently Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s Information Technology & Support Department launched the year of the “Physician Technologies Program” with an onsite technological EXPO. Over fourteen technologies were demonstrated, including new software to make physician work more clinically efficient. “The IT&S Department is focusing on the development of applications and hardware platforms that enable physicians to experience a technology-friendly medical center, resulting in enhanced patient care,” says Tomas Gregorio, Vice President & CIO, Information, Technology and Services, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center At the EXPO, physicians were able to learn more about a variety of new technologies. There were fourteen tables with large screen televisions and equipment that the physicians could test and preview. Even physicians who have not incorporated new software applications into their medical practices learned the beginning steps of how these systems could benefit them. Whether a physician is sitting at a workstation, rounding on the floors of the hospital, or outside of the facility, the same access to information is possible, says Mr. Gregorio. At the EXPO, some physicians reported that they used the voice recognition technology in their practices, and have found it to be helpful in eliminating handwriting errors, making referrals, and cutting down on transcriptions costs. “In this era when physicians are required to do a lot more in terms of documentation and are putting more scrutiny on what they document, these technologies are very helpful in making the lives of physicians easier,” says Jeremias Murillo, MD, Saint Barnabas health Care System Vice President of Clinical Services. Helping Physicians Stay Connected Newark Beth Israel Medical Center plans to create a concierge service to help train physicians in the latest applications. They will also provide a Tablet PC, which is a notebook mobile computer, for physicians to try as they progress with the new technology. As Saint Barnabas Health Care System’s technology incubator, NBIMC’s IT&S Department focuses creating an environment of care where a physician can maximize time and have clinical information at his or her fingertips regardless of location. “The IT&S department is the hospital’s central nervous system, and they are fully focused on creating a technological environment that is easy for physicians to access and operate,” adds John A. Brennan, M.D., Executive Director of NBIMC.
