Press Releases - 2008 Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC), part of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, offers Outpatient Program for Children and Workshops for Parents Newark, N.J.— Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC), part of the Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Network at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, provides an intensive outpatient program for children age 4 to 11 who exhibit behavioral problems. In a supportive, structured inpatient setting designed for youngsters in crisis, TLC provides treatment to enhance self-esteem, improve problem-solving skills, decrease poor impulse control, increase the child’s attention span and improve family relations. “TLC assists children with behavioral problems and helps them to reach their fullest potential,” says Najeeb Riaz, M.D., Child Psychiatrist for the Behavioral Health Network at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. “The program integrates a multimodal approach to treatment to engage children and educate and empower families.” The TLC Program uses an interdisciplinary team approach to create and implement a treatment plan that is tailored to each child’s individual needs. TLC treatment integrates all of the following:
Attendance in the program is five days a week, three hours each day from 1-4 p.m., and summer hours are from 9-12 pm. Children can receive psychiatric evaluations and medication monitoring as needed. Parent Support Workshop TLC offers a monthly Parent Support Workshop to educate parents and guardians in using alternative ways of managing their child’s behavior at home and in social situations. Families learn more about the child’s behavior, developmental stages, safe behavior management techniques, medication issues, and resources available. Offered one Tuesday a month, the workshop has morning (10:30-11:30 am) and evening sessions (5-6 pm) available. TLC is located at 250 Lehigh Avenue in Newark.
